Skylab & Shuttle Astronaut

Jack Lousma earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1959 and an Engineer's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1965. As an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps for 25 years, Jack Lousma was a jet attack pilot, a reconnaissance pilot, and a NASA astronaut. During 17 years at NASA, he was the Pilot of the two-month mission aboard the Skylab Space Station in 1973 and the Commander of the third orbital test flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1982. Jack Lousma was also the backup Docking Module Pilot for the joint US-Soviet ApoIIo-Soyuz spaceflight in 1975.

In 1983, Jack Lousma departed NASA, and he also resigned from the Marine Corps with the rank of Colonel after 25 years of service. He returned to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1984 and has since been engaged in research and development in aerospace and in other projects on the leading edge of technology. Since 1989, he has been an officer of several emerging companies involved in the development, production, and marketing of innovative high technology products and services, and Jack Lousmais currently the President, CEO, and Chairman of a company producing an innovative electronic dental instrument. Jack Lousma is a Director of Republic Bank and of Newcor, Inc., a manufacturer of precision-machined components and molded plastic parts for the automotive industry. He also serves on the boards of several emerging high-technology companies.

Jack Lousma has been awarded four honorary doctorate degrees including one in Astronautical Science from the University of Michigan, where he is also an Adjunct Professor of Aerospace Engineering. Among his other awards are four Distinguished Service Medals, NASA Space Medal, Collier Trophy, and Goddard Memorial Trophy. Jack Lousma has been inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame and the Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame.
